La parte nord della Valténesi, quella che si affaccia sul Garda, comprende il territorio di San Felice del Benaco. Oltre alle località di Portese e Cisano, entro i suoi confini vanta la stupenda Isola di Garda, l’isolotto di S. Biagio e lo scoglio detto dell'Altare.
Le più antiche testimonianze sulla presenza umana in questi luoghi sono di età preistorica; Il paese, chiamato fino al 1928 San Felice di Scovolo, era già importante ai tempi dell'Antica Roma;di quell’epoca sono rimaste significative tracce come una lapide dedicata a Nettuno murata nella parere orientale della chiesa parrocchiale. Di recente sono stati scoperti resti di necropoli; inoltre in località S. Fermo, durante la campagna di scavi compiuta dall’aprile al luglio 1971, furono portati alla luce strutture murarie, tessere musive, frammenti di ceramica lavorata e di vetri indicanti la presenza di un edificio romano.

Der nördliche Teil des Tals Valtensi, welcher sich dem Gardasee zuwendet beihaltet das Gebiet San Felice del Benaco. Neben den Ortschaften Portese und Cisano kann sich diese Gemeinde auch mit der wunderschönen Isola di Garda, dem Inselchen S. Biaggio und dem Felsvorsprung „l`Altaro“ schmücken. Die ältesten Nachweise menschlicher Präsenz an diesem Ort führen einen in die Prähistorie zurück. Dieses Gebiet wurde bis 1928 San Felice di Scovola genannt und war schon ein wichtiges Zentrum währen der Römerzeit. Aus dieser Zeit sind einige bedeutende Spuren zu finden wie z.B. eine Steinskulptur (dem Neptun gewidmet), welche in der südlichen Wand der Wallfahrtskirche eingemauert ist. Jüngst wurden Überreste einer Nekropolis entdeckt. Während der Ausgrabungskampagnen von April bis Juli 1971 wurden Mauerstrukturen Mosaike und Fragmente von bearbeiteten Keramiken und Glas ans Licht gebracht. Diese Entdeckungen weisen daraufhin, dass hier einst ein romanisches Gebäude stand.


San Felice del Benaco
The northern section of the Valtenesi facing lake Garda encloses the area of San Felice del Benaco. Within its borders there are the areas of Portese and Cisano and the beautiful Isola di Garda, St Biagio’s islet and the rock called “the altar’s”.
The oldest proof of human presence in these territories goes back to prehistoric times; the village, that used to be called St Felice di Scovolo until 1928, was important in Roman times; a memorial stone dedicated to Neptune is enclosed in the eastern wall of the parish church. Recently, the remains of a necropolis were discovered in the St Fermo area, during some digging executed between April and July 1971. Wall sections, mosaic pieces, fragments of decorated ceramic and glass were found to confirm the presence of a Roman building.
